H2NorthEast: The large-scale, cost-effective, sustainable delivery of low carbon blue hydrogen

H2NorthEast is bringing new energy to Teesside. This exciting and innovative project offers a large-scale, cost-effective and sustainable way to deliver low carbon blue hydrogen, with the potential to have a major impact on the region’s economy.

H2NorthEast will help Teesside to become one of the world’s first decarbonised industrial clusters through the production and consumption of low carbon hydrogen. By leveraging the existing Central Area Transmission System (CATS) infrastructure, the project has the potential to deliver 10% of the UK’s target 10GW hydrogen production capacity.

As the energy industry continues its transition to net zero, H2NorthEast will significantly contribute to the UK’s industrial decarbonisation and domestic energy security and support the UK’s 2050 net zero targets.

Our purpose

H2NorthEast demonstrates the collective commitment of the partners and their investors to develop, operate and invest in key energy infrastructure assets to drive energy security and a sustainable net zero transition in the UK.

Our vision

In 2022, Kellas co-published A Vision for Hydrogen in the Tees Valley which sets out how the area can become globally significant in the production, consumption and export of low carbon hydrogen putting it at the heart of a sustainable net zero transition in the UK.

The East Coast Cluster

The project is part of the East Coast Cluster (ECC). Comprising the Humber and Teesside industrial regions, the ECC offers the single biggest opportunity to decarbonise energy intensive industries anywhere in the country.

Investment

Bringing over £2bn investment and contributing an additional £200-300m to the local economy

With plans to scale up hydrogen production to over 1GW by the early 2030s, the project has the potential to create thousands of local jobs contributing an additional £200-300m to the local economy. The partners are also committed to investing in local people, through the provision of high quality training, apprenticeships, and university scholarships.

“H2NorthEast’s unique attributes make it the most viable low carbon project in the ECC.

It will deliver a major reduction in emissions, increased economic benefits and value for money.”
